Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Performance Optimization and Tuning Handbook

The reception of this SQL performance tuning book reveals a mix of appreciation and frustration among readers. Many reviewers note that the book is engaging and provides a solid introduction to SQL performance optimization, especially for beginners and mid-level database administrators (DBAs). They appreciate its self-improvement approach rather than a mere technical manual, which helps shift their mindset towards database tuning practices. However, this newer edition faces significant criticism regarding its content accuracy and technical validity. Unlike its predecessor, which was well-received for its depth and clarity, this book has been seen as incomplete and misleading in parts. Reviewers have pointed out glaring omissions and erroneous statements that detract from its overall value, leading to concerns about the reputation of the author and the book's credibility. Additionally, many believe that it fails to deliver the depth of information available in previous works, particularly regarding advanced topics like indexing and transactions. Despite these shortcomings, some users still find merit in the foundational explanations it provides. The book seems to serve as a stepping stone for those unfamiliar with the intricacies of MS SQL and performance tuning, albeit at the expense of more experienced readers who would benefit from a deeper exploration of the subject. Overall, while the book offers a friendly introduction to SQL performance optimization, it appears to fall short for skilled practitioners seeking comprehensive insight and reliable guidance. **
