What is the MSD 8739 Two Step Module Selector?

The MSD 8739 Two Step Module Selector is a performance tool designed to enable users to select between two separate ignition timing curves or RPM limits for enhanced driving conditions. This module allows drivers to optimize their vehicle's performance in various scenarios, whether for street use or race applications. By using this selector, one can manage ignition timing settings effortlessly, tapping into the full potential of their ignition system. It’s especially useful in motorsport environments where rapid adjustments can lead to decisive advantage.

How does the MSD 8739 Two Step Module Selector work?

The MSD 8739 operates by allowing the driver to switch between two programmed RPM limits or ignition timing profiles. This is accomplished via a simple switch that can be installed within easy reach of the driver. The two-step feature acts as a rev limiter during launch, allowing for consistency and control at the start of a race or hard launch. This ensures optimal performance tailored to the circumstances, whether on the track or for street applications, providing versatility for performance enthusiasts.

What are the installation requirements for the MSD 8739?

Installing the MSD 8739 Two Step Module Selector requires basic automotive wiring skills. It connects to the ignition system, which typically includes splicing into existing wiring or using the provided connectors. The device is designed for compatibility with various MSD ignition systems, making it a flexible option for performance upgrades. Following the detailed installation instructions is crucial to ensure proper function. Proper installation will allow enthusiasts to fully utilize the device's features for improved performance.

Is the MSD 8739 compatible with all vehicles?

While the MSD 8739 Two Step Module Selector is versatile, it is specifically designed for use with MSD ignition systems. Compatibility tends to vary with vehicle models, engine types, and existing ignition setups. It is ideal for high-performance and modified vehicles where control of ignition timing can substantially impact performance. Always check the manufacturer’s specifications and ensure that your ignition system aligns with the requirements of the MSD 8739 for optimal results.

Can I use the MSD 8739 for daily driving?

Yes, the MSD 8739 Two Step Module Selector can be used for daily driving, although its primary intention is to enhance performance under race conditions. The ability to switch between different ignition maps allows users to optimize their vehicle's response depending on the anticipated driving scenario. This versatility means you can have a more conservative tune for everyday use and a more aggressive setup for spirited drives or track days, enhancing both safety and performance.

What benefits does the Two Step feature provide?

The Two Step feature on the MSD 8739 allows for a controlled engine launch by limiting the engine RPM before takeoff. This is particularly beneficial in drag racing, where consistent launches can dramatically improve overall performance. By holding the RPM at a preset limit, drivers can achieve optimum torque without excessive wheel spin, leading to better acceleration off the line. This feature is beneficial for enthusiasts looking to refine their launch techniques for better race outcomes.

Can I modify the ignition curves on the MSD 8739?

Yes, the MSD 8739 allows you to modify ignition curves, giving you the flexibility to customize the performance characteristics according to your needs. You can create distinct ignition timing maps for different driving conditions, such as track applications or street driving. Leveraging this customization is crucial for tuners aiming to maximize performance gains. Fine-tuning your ignition curves can lead to increased power output and efficiency under various operating conditions.

What types of connectors does the MSD 8739 use?

The MSD 8739 Two Step Module Selector utilizes spade connectors for easy installation into existing ignition systems. These connectors are designed for reliable electrical connections while being straightforward to work with during installation. Ensuring solid connections is important for consistent performance and minimization of electrical interference. The quality of these connectors contributes to the durability and effectiveness of the unit in demanding automotive environments.

Will the MSD 8739 affect my fuel economy?

While the MSD 8739 is primarily aimed at performance enhancement, its ability to manage ignition timing can have indirect effects on fuel economy. By allowing for adjustments based on driving conditions, users may find they are able to run a more efficient ignition curve during normal driving, optimizing fuel delivery and consumption. However, for race conditions, the focus leans more towards maximizing power rather than fuel economy, making the device a versatile option for varied driving needs.
